Improved access and outcomes for patients

Additional funding for frontline clinical roles to increase capacity within general practice was made available through the Comprehensive Primary and Community Care Team initiative.

Mahitahi Hauora supported the enablement of this programme across all participating general practices in Tai Tokerau, however, funding runs out in June 2025, and we are yet to receive a decision on the future of the programme.

As we wait to hear more, this new report from General practice New Zealand (GPNZ) highlights the improvements to access and outcomes that have been gained from the programme, including a reduction in ED attendance and hospital admissions, more conditions successfully being managed within general practice, reduced appointment wait times, and more tailored care and wrap-around support offered to patients. Some practices said that the additional roles allowed them to open their books to new enrolments.

“It’s so rewarding getting to make people’s lives just a little bit easier by having the time and means to do it. It just makes me want to cry when these patients say, ‘Thank you for caring.’ When we fight so hard for equity this work is really what helps make a difference, and our job satisfaction is so much better.” Mahitahi Hauora Care Coordinator.
