After-hours services

After-hours services are available to help you if you need medical care outside the opening hours of your general practice.

For serious, life-threatening conditions

  • Call 111 for emergency services.

For general health advice

  • Healthline NZ: Call 0800 611 116.
    This service is available 24/7.

For remote (online, telephone) consultation

  • Ka Ora Telecare: Call 0800 252 672.
    This service is for people living in rural areas to access online consultations after-hours (5pm – 8:30am on weekdays, 24 hours over weekends and public holidays). They provide free nurse assessments and advice, but fees apply for telephone consults with Nurse Practitioners and Doctors. There are no fees for children under 14.
  • Online GP Care: https://www.healthnz.govt.nz/online-phone-healthcare/online-gp-care
    This service is available to all patients in Aotearoa regardless of location. The site gives access to a selection of online consultation providers. Consultation fees vary by provider. Children are only free for those with Community Services Cards.

Accident & Urgent Medical

Whangārei

  • Urgent Care White Cross Whangārei provides comprehensive services for accidents and illnesses seven days a week.
  • Whangārei Hospital Emergency Department is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Patients can be referred by their GP, delivered by ambulance, or they may self-present


Mid-North

  • In the Mid-North area, you can access after-hours services by contacting your local medical centre. A triage nurse will assist you, assess your health needs, and refer you to the after-hours on-call GP if you need it. The GP after-hours centre is at the Bay of Islands Hospital, Hospital Road, Kawakawa.
    You must ring your local medical centre before going to the GP after-hours centre. If you attend the GP after-hours centre, there will be a charge. Charges are displayed at local medical centres and the GP after-hours centre.
  • General Practice After-Hours Clinic, Bay of Islands Hospital
    Monday to Friday: 5pm – 10pm
    Saturday: 1pm – 10pm
    Sunday and public holidays: 8am – 10pm
  • Bay of Islands Hospital
    There is no Emergency Department at Bay of Islands Hospital, however you can access the Accidental and Medical service onsite after hours when your normal healthcare provider is closed.


Far North

  • Primary Care After-Hours Clinic, Kaitaia Hospital (located in Outpatients department)
    Monday to Friday: 6pm – 9pm
    Saturday and Sunday: 10am – 1 pm and 6pm – 9pm
  • Kaitaia Hospital
    There is no Emergency Department at Kaitaia Hospital, however you can access the Accidental and Medical service onsite after hours when your normal healthcare provider is closed.
