What Matters to Whānau

Putting whānau at the centre of healthcare

What Matters to Whānau gives voice to whānau and Māori communities in the Tai Tokerau. It puts whānau at the centre of decision-making in primary healthcare. It can be used to identify goals and aspirations of whānau at an individual, whānau and community level, measured by how whānau see, feel and hear experiences in a values-based approach.

By whānau, for whānau

Developed from the insights and stories shared by over 200 whānau ranging in age from 5 to 90 years, What Matters to Whānau represents an authentic whānau voice.

Values-based

Five values are at the heart of What Matters to Whānau:

  • Aroha – unconditional acceptance is seen through the footprints of our actions
  • Whānau – an active contributor to a purposeful life
  • Whānaungatanga – quality of time
  • Tikanga – foundations of knowing we are doing the right thing
  • Whakapapa – a place to stand to be strong in the decisions we make

It’s a strengths-based, whole-of-community approach with accountability to those who should be at the centre of their care – our whānau and communities.

Te Whata Toiora

The conceptual framework for our Papa Tikanga What Matters to Whānau is modelled by a whata, a community pantry used by Māori to hold kai.
